There is resting and then there is sleeping. The latter is what would be called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the deepest state of sleep where the mind resets and processes memories while the body rests and re-energizes. According to some new research, failing to get enough REM sleep may go as far as an increased risk of death due to several different diseases.
The study involved over 3,000 men and women whose sleep patterns were closely monitored. Some of these participants were also dealing with a sleep disorder. For just five percent loss of sleep, the risk of cardiovascular issues as well as the risk of death increasing by more than twelve percent.
One way to train the body into sleeping better and deeper is to create a healthy sleep environment. This means sleeping a cool bedroom free of light sources such as smartphones and making sure you aren’t drinking alcohol or consuming spicy foods just before bedtime.
Remember that your bed is also a major factor in your sleep quality. If you’re tossing and turning constantly, the body will be unable to enter or remain in the REM sleep stage.
